When we were kids, our mom would read us stories before we went to bed. RK Narayan or Amar Chitra Katha were the usual favourites, but the one book that I always loved was Saraswati Rathnam’s Kanda Puranam (Chapters of a Town). Born and brought up in Kerala, I didn’t know that there was an animated version of Saraswati Rathnam’s work until I came across this Youtube video: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=0dHF4Xv90rA. The animation of the book is wonderful and it brings alive the various stories that are re-enacted through gestures and facial expressions. I was so impressed that I downloaded the book in e-book format and read it on my Kindle. The story is about Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Bharata, Shatrughan and the rest of his brothers. Like most Hindu children, they were taught to obey their parents at all times—especially when it came to following their elders’ rules without question, but for Rama this was not always so easy. He was a child of God, and he did what he had to do, no matter how his parents reacted. Even though this book was written in the 1960s, it is still relevant today. Rama had to follow rules of his times; we have to follow the rules of our time. The characters of this story talk of values and principles that hold true throughout time and through generations: for example: "Whatsoever is established by tradition and sanctioned by antiquity is adhered to and followed, and never abandoned." (Kanda Puranam 2/4/7). This book tells us that we should never be arrogant, but that we should be polite always, even when we disagree with one another. It also tells us to avoid pride and haughtiness, as those are qualities that will lead us astray from our path. This book is a great example of the values that we should hold true always. The characters in this story teach us many lessons about life and its many different opportunities. When Rama was young, he was taught to understand the value of knowledge and learning. We learn from his character that we should never anger a person who is wise or an elder. The book says, “Teach your children what is good and instruct them in the various branches of knowledge” (1/6/27). When Bharata was young, he was told that the greatest gift of all is a godly and believing heart and that we must always be faithful and devoted to our husband, especially in times of difficulty. The book also tells us that we should be true to ourselves and do what we know in our hearts to be right. What we think is best for us, even if no one else around us agrees. We can see this in Rama when he left Ayodhya to go on his 14-year exile. Rama never doubted himself or what he knew was right; he simply did what was necessary.
